Thanksgiving Success Story

Congratulations to the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project (“MARP”) on their successful campaign to help raise funds for Ingersoll Community Center’s Thanksgiving meal.  In just 10 days, 19 helpers donated to MARP’s contribution to this effort to help provide a hot meal to 100 local residents in need on this recent Thanksgiving.

The program at Ingersoll Community Center, which is operated by University Settlement, was a collaborative effort by local residents and organizations to furnish food, supplies and volunteers for in-need Brooklyn residents.  As part of a larger initiative to improve local food access by bringing fresh produce from local farms to the neighborhood, MARP assisted by raising funds to pay for seasonal, fresh ingredients for this meal such as squash, carrots, red potatoes, onions, apples and greens from their local farm stand partner, Glebocki Farms, as well as other much needed supplies.

In a time where budgets are being cut and unemployment is high, food security has become an increasingly important issue for many households.  In addressing this need in their community, MARP seeks to tackle pressing issues such as this Thanksgiving meal through programs like their Myrtle Eats Fresh initiatives, which provides fresh, locally sourced food available to everyone.

Although times are difficult for many, we are proud that MARP utilized HelpersUnite for their crowdfunding needs in order to ensure that others were able to partake in this national holiday with fresh meals.  It is projects like these that bring us joy and reinforce why we started this platform.  A special thank you goes out to MARP and to all that made a special day for so many!

Testimonials From Wonderful Project Creators

“HelpersUnite is such a wonderful way to help small businesses reach out to the world and achieve the funds needed to get off the ground. I love that it forces those of us looking for a way to get started to give back to the community and spread those funds around to truly help those in need. The staff is remarkable, punctual, always there to guide me, and a fun group all around! I know that I have made new friends through this whole process! I would recommend HelpersUnite to anyone looking to support new entrepreneurs or wonderful artistic people who have a new idea that needs funding. Since joining HelpersUnite and working with the tools that they have given me, the word is spreading so fast about what we do and have even received a segment spot on a local news station! I was never alone through the process and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

“I love the idea of being able to create something while also helping to make the world a better place in some small way. We picked HelpersUnite because that’s their vision too, and what’s more, they’ve made it really easy for creators by handling all the administrative details on the charitable giving side so we can focus on the part we love most – creating something wonderful.”

“I am enjoying working with HelpersUnite, for many reasons. I love that all of the people I have worked with at HelpersUnite are creative & easy to work with. I am enjoying seeing the interest from the public, and love that our Kids Cooking Green program is having expanded coverage for what we do, while working with HelpersUnite. The staff at HelpersUnite is passionate about what they do, and they are attracting a unique and interesting base of small independent business, that would otherwise not be able to reach as many people. I feel honored to be highlighted as one of the first businesses to work with HelpersUnite!”

“The purpose of my company is to raise money for charity through entertainment. Why not raise money for charity while fundraising as well! The whole HelpersUnite team was incredibly helpful and attentive. They answered each of our questions both thoroughly and promptly. They supported my company’s mission through various Facebook postings and blogs. I have already recommended HelpersUnite to another project I am working on, and I can’t wait to use HelpersUnite for Nunya’s next endeavor. Thanks!”

Great Theatre For A Great Cause

“I was fortunate to find out about HelpersUnite via a friend just as they were starting up and I’m so thrilled to be a part of their venture. The most critical thing for a non-profit that has a viable reason for being is to simply to generate awareness, let people know that they exist. HelpersUnite allows us to broaden our base, to have exposure to an audience we might not otherwise connect with.

The HelpersUnite team is great to work with, very professional and responsive. I believe they have an outstanding business model that is a “win-win,” for causes and for potential donors who want an easy vehicle to quickly evaluate alternative causes.”

“The great thing about HelpersUnite is that they reach out to you and help you. You don’t have to browse and search for the answers you need. HelpersUnite is an amazing way to not only help your cause, but to help other causes as well. You get to have people help you help others. It’s a genius idea and it’s a great way to help those who need it.”

Help Great Theatre for a Great Cause!

With only 7 days left until the end of their campaign, producers Michael and Mariya King need your help for a great cause! Thanks to the 29 people who have helped so far, they now need to raise just under $5,000 more to hit their goal.

Often one of the first budgets to be cut in any economic downturn is for the arts, and the recent global recession has been no exception. To fill this void within independent theatre, Michael and Mariya created Nunya Productions LLC in 2009 with the motto “Great Theatre For a Great Cause.”  Their purpose is twofold: to create opportunities for New York actors to perform meaningful work and to make a positive global impact in the process.

Michael and Mariya launched a campaign with HelpersUnite to fund their production of Neil LaBute’s “Some Girl(s),” a dark comedy about a young writer, on the verge of marrying his fiancé, who decides to visit ex-girlfriends across the country prior to the big day.  Described as “outrageously funny and deadly serious portrait of the writer as a seducer [which] casts a truthful, hilarious light on a typical American male as he wanders through the heart of darkness that is himself,” it is sure to be an enjoyable production!

True to their motto, this production will benefit the organization “To Write Love On Her Arms.”  TWLOHA is a non-profit movement helping those with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.  On the campaign’s HelpersUnite webpage, Mariya describes how this is an important and personal cause given her own struggles with these issues.

Please check them out, and learn about how donations starting as low as $5 will help them produce this entertaining piece, which in turn will put more money and awareness towards their important cause, To Write Love On Her Arms.

A Month (and a Day Ago)…

Hello Friends and Supporters!

A month (and a day ago), the world didn’t know we existed (probably because we hadn’t launched yet). Well, today is our one month birthday and I am proud to say that from California to Brazil to France and back around to Asia more than a few folks know who were are now! So, from the entire HelpersUnite team, thank you so much to our awesome Creators and kind Helpers along with all of the very supportive journalists for all of your love this first month.

We’ve had so many new creative projects go live like “The Painted Shoe.” These ladies are revolutionizing what it means to be a shoe and it’s very cool, trust me :) . We also launched “Off the Page” which is the passion of two Brooklyn-based educators who are out to change the way kids learn by guiding them to make dynamic and physically active connections to learning. It’s good and important work, check them out!

Also, as is the spirit of HelpersUnite, charities like The FealGood Foundation who are fighting for 9/11 first responder cancer victims and Sankara Eye Foundation who are dedicated to helping people with eye afflictions in India are on board with teaming up with filmmakers, artists, and musicians who want to make a difference.

Oh and the love from the media? Wow. In the past month, we have been featured in Fast Company, The Film Industry Network, The Next Web, The Daily CrowdSource, and CrowdSourcing.org, just to name a few. On top of that, writer Shawn Graham coined a phrase after us: “Crowd Karma.” What a cool concept and spot on for what HelpersUnite is all about!

So, on this first one month birthday of ours, we raise a glass to you all and thank you for being so encouraging and kind to us. We won’t let you down!

Cheers.
Luan and the HelpersUnite Team

More Great Coverage About HelpersUnite!

We’re very excited to report that the great press just keeps on coming! This morning Film Industry Network posted a great interview that they held with HelpersUnite’s President and Co-Founder, Luan Cox, in which she discusses how the platform was conceived and what makes us so unique.

The interview starts with how the whole idea got started: in seeing the crowdfunding space taking off, we believed that there had to be a better way to use this growing movement not only to promote new creative projects but also for social good. Through much thought, planning and some incredible coding to seamlessly bring together the various components of the site, HelpersUnite.com was born. This, she explains, became the world’s first “Crowd Karma” (creative plus chartable) funding site, setting it apart from other crowdfunding models. The interview concludes with some of the added benefits, beyond the act of giving back, that result from the site’s unique requirement that projects must donate a portion of funding to a charity: it also creates a community among donors, project creators and charities, which HelpersUnite seeks to foster. Through it, donors have a better understanding of the project creator’s values, charities receive funding that they may not have otherwise and project creators receive another advocate through the charity helping to promote the project from which it benefits as well. As the site and community grow, we look forward to watching this become an even more powerful tool for creating “Crowd Karma.” (see article on Fast Company)

Happy, healthy, motivated kids

Believe it or not, there’s magic in carrots, butternut squash, parsnips and fennel.  Created by talented chefs Lori Deliso and Liza Connolly, the Kids Cooking Green helps fifth and six graders learn about local food, farmers markets, hands-on cooking and nutrition.  They’ve taught over a thousand kids in just five years in the Lexington, Mass. area.

The kids love it — and parents learn more about their kids and make a point to commit to more family time around the table.  With the average American parent spending just 38.5 minutes a week having meaningful conversations with their kids, that’s a good thing!

Now, Kids Cooking Green seeks funding to train teachers, write a cookbook, and reach kids in underserved areas. With these new resources, Lori and Lisa can reach new areas and increase their network of supportive local farmers.
